I test drove both again before I bought my 5 (and had a 3 series several years back). Biggest issue for me was interior roominess. The 3 series was tight up front and reminded me of all the small cars I used to drive when I was younger. The 5 gives me room to move around up front and feels more like a full size car. Also, no comparison for rear seat room. If you have to put two adults in the rear, the 5 is the only option. Not that you can't squeeze them in the 3, but their knees would too tight for any serious comfort.

I guess it boils down to, when I was was younger (in my 20s), rear seat room was not be such a big deal, my friends at that age didn't mind being a little cramped to ride in a 3 series. But now that I'm closer to 40, comfort is 'nearly' as important as style and speed.

For me the E60 is the perfect car size wise. The 3 series is a great car but hard to fit anyone in the back. The seats are so comfortable in the E60, too (sports package). Plus the way I looked at it, a 335 xi optioned the same way I got my car would have been over 50K, too. Why not spend a bit more and get the perfect car .

i have always loved big sedans - for space; presence and they look graceful. when i saw my e60 in the 'flesh' i was convinced it was more of a car than the 3 series!more than adequate performance for every day driving plus a more comfort and definitely luxurius. the suspension is much better on the 5er as well, a lot more driver-assisting technology etc.

There's no denying that a 335 has plenty of torque to put a huge smile on your face and the drivability at fast or slow pace is exceptional. To it's detriment though, it has the N54 which Is the best and worst engine ever. Having just succumbed to the exhausting service requirements to keep it running, I had mine bought back by BMW which felt shitty until they placed a big check in my hand. If they made a powerful 3 series that wasn't plagued by HPFP issues or otherwise it would be the best car available for ~$50k. Despite the added room in the E60, I doubt that many people here would hesitate to sell their kids on ebay and chop a couple inches off their legs to move from an E60 to an M3.

Are you kidding me?? Really?? I agree an M3 is a hot car, but I wouldnt give up my 545i for it. The M3 is maybe a tick faster off the line since its lighter and standard, but top end is all the 545i. Again, the comfort factor has to play into it here... the M is small... period.

If you are talking about the last generation M3, I think it is still faster than the 545i at triple digits.

I'm 4' 8" and middle of the road guy, so 5 series is perfect. Look at Napoleon, he was short. Nothing wrong with that . . . OK, I'm not 4' 8" but am the average male American height. So there you go, average=middle of the road=5 series.
