Believe it - get one fully loaded and the cost goes past 65k.

Wow...I thought this thread was going to be why buy 550 (360hp) when the 55? (400+hp) may only be 7 months away!!! The 335 vs. 550 arguement is getting boring...same ol same ol! Maybe both cars do the same thing, just 2 different ways and BMW is giving the consumer more choices???
+1. The announcements of ttV8 are enough to me to probably slow down the sales of 550.

I put off going LCI 6er just on rumors of the ttV8, which now is a reality. Now the DCT (DSG ?) tranny is confirmed. So I want both. So first model coupe with both is MINE, I don't care if it is in current E63 or F12 chassis.

The 535 and 550 are fairly different and I think it is great that BMW produced both. I had an Audi S4 for 3 years and I do miss that V8 rumble and throw you back in your seat speed. That being said, I went with the 535 because of similar performance to both the 550 and the S4 and I could not justify the ~$8K premium of the 550 over the 535. I would not falut anyone for getting the 550 at all. I would have likely opted for it if my "practical" side did not get the best of me especially since I am not one to modify a car at all... even with software.

The most compelling tangent in this debate is not the step from the 535 to the 550, but rather the choice of the 550 to the M5. All subjective opinions aside, simply quantify the amount of go fast by the purchase price, and you get the obvious answer. The 535, at base MSRP, works out to $164.67 bucks per hp. The 550, at base MSRP, is more of a bargin, at $162.50 per hp. The M5, is just a tad higher, at $165.80 per pony. For 3 bucks, my next sedan will be the M5.

can we all agree that they are both great cars and that they are a joy to drive?! this argument will rage on forever, im just glad that as an owner of one of these great cars i can be a part of it! its like choosing between a brunette and a blonde, big boobs and small boobs, big ass and a small ass, its all a matter of preference and what suits you. I will tell you one thing though if i was willing to spend over 70 grand for a car it would have been for a leftover 2006 m5 that was in my dealer's showroom. that is the whole reason i began looking for a new car... those bastards know how to suck you in as soon as i realized it was out of my price range there was the 535 with x-drive. SOLD!!!!!!!!!!!

fuel pump issues are a big problem for the 3.0TT engine, well documented with 335 owners.

Its a great engine, but after having a number of FI cars, I will always choose NA over FI now. The piece of mind is greater than my willingness to mod cars now.

btw, im sure fixing a blown turbo on the 335/535 is going to cost a lot more than $3,4k

i see a lot of older saab aeros out on the road so im sure if saab is capable of making a quality turbo engine BMW can do the same. If you take care of your car im sure you can make it last and be reliable. Now if your telling all these mods might lead to the downfall of an engine i couldnt answer you there and you might be right. To be on this forum it shows that you love your car enough to talk about how to take care of it, how to mod it, and simply how great it is. judging by how long some of these members have been on this forum and the number of posts/responses there are some quality car guys here. Im sure the majority of the people here will take care of their cars and baby them to make them last.

That would be my concern... it would be a headache if you were the unlucky one that the increased boost blew a seal on the engine. Sure theres thousands of people who did it.. but knowing my luck I'm the one that get the blown engine and will be a pain to fight through warranty.

There I just went on bmwusa and built 2 identical speced 535 and 550. Difference? $8,100

Minus the M-Tech Kit... which is say... $2500 = $5,600 difference just for the engine... Oh...

Wheels: say you can get a set of #172 for $1000 after trade in of the #124s difference now is $4,600 one more thing... does the 550 have slightly larger brakes than the 535?

Brakes? $whatever the cost...

So really... the price difference between the 535 and the 550 is about $4K - $5K.

I'll vote for the 550 if this was the case.

Attachment 43580 Attachment 43581

And now... to chip it... $1200. Difference is down to $3,400 but at the risk of future problems and reliability... Ya... its been tested... etc etc... sure sure. short term reliability has been tested... how long as the 335 been out? not that long as as I can recall...

$3,400 to have full blown warranty backed up by BMW no risk no hassle... no wasting time... you get the perfect car right from the factory... I'll take the 550.
The brakes are the same. Not everybody likes the M5 style esthetics on a non-M car, so you really can't subtract for that automatically. There are no warranty issues with the Dinan 535 for 4 yrs/50k miles its a collaboration BMW/Dinan warranty, after that you are at your own risk with either car.
The 530 vs. the 545 was a no brainer- Staggard wheels, bigger brakes, better interior, lots more power, xenon lights. Also there was no M5 when I got my 545, so it was the topdog e60, no exceptions.

Since that?s simply not true, the question really isn?t terribly valid. The 550i, as befits the top of the range, has options unique to that model.
What can you get additional in the 550? You can now get the M5 look-a-like bodywork in both models now. That's the only think I could think of.
