If it's normal I'm fine with it, but if it's not then obviously I'd like to address it.

Hello,

I have a 2004 530i. During its initial factory bumper to bumper warranty I made numerous complaints to my dealer about the engine whistling noise. The dealer's shop foreman told me it was a venturi effect creating the noise somewhere in the intake system. I was told it was a normal sound associated with the m54 engine and that there was nothing they could do to fix it. I was still not entirely convinced. I complained a bit more which eventually got me a meeting with the regional technician whom dealer's contact when they can't resolve an issue. I drove the car with him in it and made sure he could hear the whistle. His recommendation was to replace the throttle body assembly. (probably to keep me quiet) After the throttle body was replaced, it still made the same noise.

I decided to take the air intake tubing off the throttle body myself and run the car to see if the noise was produced somewhere in the plumbing (ie- air filter box) The whistle was present with the throttle body opening completely exposed. At this point I decided to give up. I am now convinced it is related to a venturi effect of air in the throttle body past the idle air control motor pintle or throttle plate.

Hope this helps.
