I have a whine when pressing on the gas and when the car is moving - the noise sounds something like when you have a loose alternator belt, but not as loud or as high pitched. The whine is audible when the front window/s are wound down and at speeds up to about 40km. There's no whine when pressing on the gas and the car is in park or neutral, i.e. not moving.

Any idea what this is and how it can be fixed - an independant BMW automototive shop that I went to does not know what it is.

Same problem I noticed today. I personally think it's just the wheels at low speeds. It's extra loud when I take my foot of the gas and when I brake.

Believe it or not I had this and it was coming from under the hood. I replaced my spark plugs and boy what a difference.

Hmm what you are describing is either a wheel bearing or something in the drive train! i would go for the latter though, have you checked the level of oil in the gear box? the clutch release bearing can also sound like this if worn!!
