Would this cable be similar or would it still be injecting power to the car?

I don't think that cable would inject power to the car but where do you plan on plugging in the second USB plug?

I'm pretty sure that would work then. I've been holding that solution as a "plan B" since my "plan A" is to find a drive that has a low enough power consumption (on spin up) to allow things to work with a single cable powered from the car's USB interface...

The others on the other board seem to have had success with the The Western Digital Passport range of hard disks. A couple of interesting points:
Even though the hard disk is formatted as FAT32 from the factory, it seems you MUST format it again as FAT32 using the FAT32 format utility from http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/ind...at32format.htm
Why?? Dunno...
Interesting also is that the WD Scorpio drive (as featured in the WD Passport portable hard disk) does have a low power spin up option. I was interested to know if it was enabled by default (it's set with a jumper), so I took the enclosure apart and found that indeed the low power setting was enabled. Still uses too much power on spin up for the BMW unfortunately. I think the BMW must have current limiting circuitry in it to limit to a max of 500mA, as per the USB spec. Why? I don't know, but probably to stop people doing stupid things like using USB mug warmers
I also think that BMW has to make something that works for USB sticks near 100% of the time. If it started supporting hard disks, everyone would phone up saying: I can't get brandX to work, why not? Etc...
Just my tuppence-worth...
Andrew
