Really? The C class is a much smaller car. Now if you say the E55, then I am right there with ya. What a beast that car is.
Well, we have a car with plenty of room--an X5 4.4i. I liked the straight-line performance of the E55, but liked the 545i much better overall. I decided to get the 545i and add some mods--to get it up to the C55 straight-line level. My purchase was made to have a third car; a non-sports car for me. I have my Z06 for when I really want to go fast in either straight or curved lines.

Ahhhhh. Nice. Talk about a monster, the Z06 is it

It is a monster--even the 02s-04s.

Quattroporte, but my wife didn't liked the idea and now I am happy to have the E60!

Issues with other cars considered:

Audi A6 4.2 (front nose ungainly, uninspired handling, depreciation)
Lexus GS430 (headroom issue, soft handling)
Infiniti M45 (looks like a Nissan, odd interior styling, depreciation)
Porsche Carrera S (impractical as daily car, would wait until DZG transmission available)
Porsche Boxter S (impractical as daily car, would regret not having a Carrera)
Range Rover (slow, no fun on curvy roads, reliability/depreciation concerns)

Very happy with my choice.

Requirements from wife: AWD + 6 cylinder.

Considered:

1. Lexus GS 300 AWD
Replacing wife's RWD 99 GS 300 so started here. Beautiful interior but uninspiring drive. Comfort access for free! Really nice touch screen nav.

(BTW, the GS is going to get the 350 engine in 2007 I think - someone was complaining about the IS350 earlier in this thread.)

2. Infiniti M35x
Definitely more power but car didn't like handling. 18" 245s stock! Great backup camera. Car felt cheap for some reason.

3. Audi A6 3.2 Quattro
Was pleasantly surprised by this car. Great interior. Exterior a little large looking for my liking. Quattro system old but felt good. Maybe in another 5 years.

4. BMW 530xi
Really like the road feel. Smooooooooth inline 6 with nice low end torque, no amazing power though. Really liked the look of the car and finally a nav system you can use while you're driving (same as my X5). Most expensive car but worth the difference. Of course, the $1k BMW CCA rebate doesn't hurt either.

Before I bought my car, I considered the following and why I did not buy them:

1) 2005 E46 M3 Comp. package - awesome car but getting outdated.

2) CLS500 - beautiful looking car but slower than the 545 and $15K more.

3) 2006 Audi S4 - test drove, came away disappointed. same performance IMO

4) MB E500 - slower and lousier handling. nicer interior though.

5) 2006 Audi 4.2 A6 - Nice car, I actually almost got this because I was used to AWD and have never had a RWD daily driver. Really tough choice. Only got my 545 after all my friends told me it would not be smart to pick an A6 over the 5er....so far no regrets!!

Audi RS6: A freakin' monster - but new body style coming out in a month or two. Too much $$ for an outdated car.
Audi A6: Didn't like the new nose
Audi A8: Nice - if I wanted to drive my living room around
Porshce C4S: Fun but just too darn small
Porsche Cayenne Turbo: Amazingly fast - just couldn't do another SUV.
Cadillac CTS V: Fast but unrefined - a four door Mustang GT
VW Phaeton: Another living room with a VW badge that was just TOO big.
BMW 645CSi: Gorgeous car that started me thinking of a new car.
At the end of the day needed a 4-door... E60 with a V8 it was. The rest is history!!

The funny thing is I never considered anything BUT a BMW. I have a '98 328i---the only other thing I looked at was the new 3 series because it has more interior room---but not nearly what I needed.

The only car I drove was the E60. I was afraid to drive the 550i because I knew I would love it and couldn't afford it. I didn't want to drive the 525i so I happily got behind the wheel of the 530i.

I've been negotiating with dealers for my custom order and will write the contract tomorrow. Should be here by Christmas! I can't wait.
