Well since you're covered, tell them to change your battery also. The two were linked in finding my solution to this same problem.
You're saving a total of 1500 bucks right now.
does the alternator really cost that much?

I changed my battery exactly 8 months ago so I think that's out of the picture...

When the alternator on my '01 740 died my "cost" for the BMW reman replacement part was almost $900 ... + about 2 hours labor to R&R ... the darn thing was water cooled!! That was about 5 years ago ... inflation probably doubled that $$ today!

My guess - battery.

I've never had a BMW battery last more than 3 years. They insist on manufacturing their own batteries still, and they are not long-lived.

Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Wow that's insane! So far I have received about $13,000 in warranty work for FOR FREE. I am pretty sure my SA wants to rip my head off

Transmission, Airconditioning Compressor, Window Actuator, Alternator, Interior Trim, and LOADS of other small stuff.

Krozi - sorry to hear about your situation, glad you made it back home and to the dealer. CPO should take care of it and you'll be back on the road soon.

So I was driving with a couple friends to meet a bunch of people at the movies and suddenly Stability Control, Transmission and Brake Assist faults clutter my iDrive screen and dash. My transmission was jerking and clunking with each shift and I could feel my power steering go out. I knew exactly what was going on because I had read about these symptoms on the forum. I was expecting the engine to stall but luckily I was exactly where I wanted to go so I pull to the parking lot, put it in park (the car slammed into park), turn off the car, hoping to be able to turn it back on but my battery is also dead. So I am gonna get the towed after the movie.

I am really glad my car died right there where I wanted to go and not on the highway where I had been only 2 minutes before . I knew this was gonna happen at some point but not at a mere 35k miles... CPO FTW!!

Thanks

-Krozi
Same thing happened to me a couple months ago... mine went on me right in the middle of busiest section of highway in Nashville.. right in front of the airport.. I have a manual trans. but I had the exact same behavior.. I just barely got it to the shoulder before it went completely dead... yes CPO FTW.. mine was covered as well.. New alternator is $1500 or $1600 installed...

Be ready to have a fight on your hands when it comes to the battery if it's fried as well.. my battery was fried when the alt. blew but they "couldn't determine" what component was at fault.. the battery or the alternator. So after much haggling, including BMWNA in on the situation, I had to fork over the cash for a new battery.. not cheap (I have a thread on this somewhere on the board)...

Wow stalling on the highway must be scary.
I don't think the battery is fried because the car started after the movie and started smoothly the next morning again
