My dealer gave me just the plastic key telling me it was a spare, but did not mention the other part is in the ipod compartment.
I never lost a car key but nevertheless you have tickeled my curiosity. Yep, the holder is there so I read the manual, but little info is to be found.
- plastic key allows you to open and close the car: tested this and yes works of corse
- marry the plastic key with the holder and you can start the engine: sand yes, this works
and why I did, I noticed the radio wasn't tuned, so indeed the settings are all remembered to the key holder, so yep, that works as well

What I noticed you do not have is the remove control for open/close and, in my case, the key did not switch off the standard BMW alarm until I married the 2 keys together and put them in the ignition lock.
In fact, the same procedure works with your regular key.

My conclusion: spare key does not support
- remote open/close
- remote activation/de-activation of alarm

So, why on earth develop a separate key ? Just to spare the cost of a remote key? Maybe they had to develop this silly plastic key for those who get in their car without key soon to be the standard?

This key is for you to keep in your wallet in case you lock yourself out. Well, it has happened. One owner here locked his children in the car last year, and left the key in the trunk and closed the trunk. His children went hysterical while he was waiting for his spare key from home. In the end he smashed the front windscreen when he could have just done it with the side window.

You have a plastic key in your wallet at all times.
If you loose your main key you can then get back in the car. At the same time if you loose your wallet with the plastic key and comeone knows it is for your car, chances are they will not know about the adpater in the glove box/trunk, you didn't! So they would get in but probably not be able to start the car.
If you don't keep your wallet key in your wallet then it must seem like a silly idea I guess, if you do and you loose your keys one day you will think it is the best idea ever.

The Audi plastic key will let you in and allow the car to start 3 times, enough to get you home or for a vallet to park the car for you and get it back to you again. I think this is an even better idea.

Am very careful with my keys but probably even more careful with my wallet
You're right, if they steel your wallet they can get away with your car. But then again, I am confident that if someone can steel my wallet, they cal also steel my keys. Actually, one could even ask my keys, and what do I do if this person has convincing arguments ? Right, I hand over my key and ask the person if he is interested in my wallet to be able to fill up.
So, I am not so paranoia about the plastic key

Thanks for this advise - keeping the plastic key in your wallet is indeed more handy !

Odd that your sale rep did not give you that information when he gave you the car.

Yeah ok, thank GOD I do NOT have the start button, in a BMW it is like a toy, or spiced up nitro switch, I like my key it is well designed, although afraid that my f10 will have only the button...

PS: the plastic grey key (for w/o start button e60) can just fit in ///M drivers leather vallet while the fob won't

Yep of course. Clichee , but, in my perception odds are that it would be mainly men not being shy of physical violance and a woman being smarter and just taking the key without me noticing it.
Well, all just theory for me and I like to keep it that way
