Hi Everyone,
I just purchase my very first e60 (used) and it is turning out to be a nightmare with this car. I just car back from the dealer for a rattling noise which they thought was the vacuum pump but it was not, problem still exist they will be now be replacing the Active Steering Pump... Second issue was the NAV would freeze and the dealer replace the heads up unit which now needs another part to be replace. With that said after the replacements of those two parts they had to do a bunch software upgrade. I drove the car home and went out again 45 minutes later and I go two very interesting surprises.
I get a Engine overheated message on the iDrive.... See Pics....
Then I tried to close the sunroof and it would go all way to close but then it would open half way.
Wondering if anyone out there has experience any of these issues after a software upgrade...

Sorry to hear that mate..
That's the consequences of buying used car. did you check the car fax before you purchased the car?
you might wanna mention about lemon law to the SA if you're in the U.S.
Don't forget to leave the car for couple days so that they can take a look at the problems thoroughly.
E60 is all computerize. sometimes it's hard to diagnose within hours, it might take days.
Good Luck Buddy.
Hope you can enjoy your e60 like we all do.

You can't attribute these problems due to the fact that he bought the car used. This could happen with a new car right off the lot. Man, I'm really sorry to hear this.....I got pissed when the O2 sensor malfunctioned, or when I had to add a touch of power steering fluid.....I can't even imagine how you're feeling.
Good luck with everything and I hope you don't get d!cked around by a dealer. Don't hesitate to involve BMWNA (if you're in the US) if the dealer doesn't resolve this to your liking.

There is an SIB on the air conditioning compressor for some E60's. My 04 545 had a strange thrashing/rattling sound coming from the right front side of the engine compartment. Repaced the AC compressor and it went away.

Aside from the rattling noise that you mentioned, it sounds like most if not all of your other problems may just be software or electronics related. Unless the car really did overheat, it's likely that all of the iDrive messages you posted may be false alarms. The sunroof issue sounds like it simply needs a reset or reinitialize (click here to be taken to a topic that will help you with this).
These cars are incredibly complex and many of the systems are reliant on other systems. If you're dealing with a dealer that isn't completely up to speed, their actions can trigger many additional issues that might be the reason for the different warnings on the display screen.
Again, just my $0.02...
