I just had my 5 updated to 11 something, I had to reset everything again, and all my saved information was deleted. updates are not fun!
Try This, Push and hold the I drive knob for at least 6 seconds, then release, turn 3 clicks clockwise, 3 clicks counter clockwise, then one click clockwise, one click counter clockwise, and finally one click clockwise. Then Push the I drive knob and behold
.... I wouldn't try to change anything but at the end of one of the menus it will tell you your software version.

i have, apparently, been updated to 11.1 and all of my settings were the same as they were before the upgrade (CD even started playing at the same place), radio station settings, fader, etc.
except
the steering wheel programmable buttons were at the factory default
and
speaking of the steering wheel programmable buttons, BMW pulled another fast one on us: according to the press release from last year:
"The new 5 Series comes as standard with a multifunction steering wheel incorporating four buttons near each of the two cross-spokes and thus allowing the driver to operate various functions without being distracted from traffic conditions around him. These include operation of the audio system and, if fitted, the telephone or voice entry function, as well as acoustic repetition of the last instructions provided by the navigation system. Two programmable multifunction keys are furthermore at the free disposal of the driver for setting functions such as permanent activation of air recirculation, Control Display on/off, mute on/off, radio/telephone switchover, etc. "
so, the button i have to program for repetition of last nav instruction should not have to be programmed for that - one of the other buttons was meant to do so? - which would leave both buttons for other functions (not that so many functions can be selected anyway!)
