upgrades/update to CCC
Are there any upgrades to the operating system for the CCC used in the E60? I understand the DVD maps can be updated, but what about the CCC system itself? any useful benefits?

Yes, the CCC module can be updated. I used ISTA/P (but you can also use SSS depending on your car's current I-level and also you can use WinFPK). When I got my 2006 car was last updated in late 2006 by the dealer. I updated the car in February with bmwtechinfo.com and a J2534 Drewtech Mongoose ISO cable.
I noticed a bunch of changes to the iDrive. First, the screen now returns to what ever function I was on before I shut the car off (it used to always default to the "home" screen), the colors and backgrounds are different, tuning into sat channel (for example) is now a one-press operation (where it used to require two presses) and it boots up much quicker.
Voice command also now allows me to control the satellite radio.
With the upgrade I also fixed my low oil warning with subzero temps with a DME update.
