its like most oil threads. lots of opinions and speculation, and not much real data......unfortunately.

i just want to do the right thing, i am hoping my 545 engine lasts for 200k.

another possibility, you could have an exhaust leak where the manifold bolts to the head. which would sound like a tick. have you determined where the noise is exactly?

Ive just bought my 545i and the engine ticking is on mine as well. Bought with 68k on the clock. Have you checked your spark plugs yet. If its the piston slap problem then you will probably have a blacked out spark plug. Either way keep us posted as i am in a similar boat.

I am 95% sure that is not it. I did describe that sound in one of my earlier posts, I know what that sounds like. The tick is coming directly under the passenger side valve over on cold start up. It does go away at operating temps....

All the time, but after fully warmed up its very quiet. Cant seem to isolate where the sound is coming from. I dont think its the same 'piston slap issue' because it sounds completely different, but i am still trying to track down the noise. Any help would be appreciated.

here is a guy on bimmerfest that just got a new engine under warranty. it had a ticking noise, bmw HQ wanted the dealer to change to a thicker oil to see if the noise went away. turns out his rod bearings were fuct.

wanted to change to a thicker oil, gee wonder why?

It is consistant with enigine speed but is very quiet yet noticable up to about 3.5 rpm when the engine noise drowns it out. It does seem to go away as engine temps wram up, but is definately noticable in the morning. It is a small tapping (almost sounds like a small exhaust leak from an old hot rod with aftermarket headers for those of you who know what that sounds like) not loud like the ticking 545i's on youtube, but is this an early sign of serious problems? Car runs fine and does not have a decrease in gas mileage. Let me know what you guys think.

Nice find! I would like to know the results if they used thicker oil, but it may not have mattered since they ended up replacing the enigine. Mine is still ticking in the mornings but i just ignore it and drive. Stuff like this makes me wonder again. Did you end up changing your oil to anything thicker?
