Transmission overhaul needed??
I was told today that my transmission, which has a hard shift from third to second (a delayed clunk when coming to a stop - so maybe it's from second to first), needs an overhaul. I am the original owner of the 2005 530i that now has 126,000 miles. I have diligently had the dealer perform all recommended services. I have complained about transmission problems in the past (car lurches or feels like it is bouncing when accelerating up an incline) but the dealer has always indicated that since the problem did not show up in the computer, there must not be a problem. Today I took it to an independent BMW specialty shop. They said that the transmission needs to be overhauled and it will cost about $4,500. Does this sound correct and if so, why did the dealer not respond to my questions about the transmission while it was under warranty?

Overhaul as a last resort. First do a transmission fluid and pan (filter include in pan) replacement. Then have the transmission adaptive settings reset (a euro indy shop can do this for you, much cheaper than the dealers).
I had the same problem also - hard down shifts 3 to 2 only. Found out my tranny drain plug was leaking resulting in loss of fluid. I did the maintenance mentioned above and all is good since. If problems persist then I'd look into the mechatronics valves. All of this would still be waaaay cheaper than 4G's.

Thank you! I will look into this. Greatly appreciate it.
