Transmission malfunctioning

Transmission malfunctioning
I have a 04 545i and I've been getting the transmission malfunction message on my idrive where it says reduced acceleration I believe. Anyways sometimes the gear indicator doesnt show up on the dash it's just blank and the other day I was driving down the road and it's like it went into neutral by itself and today when I was just sitting there still in drive and it went from drive to reverse back to drive by itself without me moving the shifter. and this is an automatic transmission btw. what could be the cause of this?
