Would you elaborate on what wear and tear items you are talking about other than cosmetic?

I would do it. V8 BMW's are really special.
If some of the complicated systems on my E60 start going haywire after my CPO is up I am seriously considering an E39 for my next car. Older cars have their maintenance issues but if you can manage that they can be rewarding and a V8 E39 is one of the best driving cars ever made.

I would do it too if I were in your shoes. I still love the E39 M5 or any E39, and would actually really love picking up an E39 wagon. Sounds like the V8 540i would be an upgrade in performance from an E60 525.
