This is SAD he's not arguing with anyone, wher did you get that from!!??? Lanzaman is just asking our opinion on a choice of two brilliant cars.

Lanzaman, if you want a pwerful car to take you from A to B (Home to work) and back in:

Comfort, refinement, with all the luxuries and peace of mind that it will start every morning and to be treated like the queen of England when you go to service it = Buy the Lexus

Buy the BMW only for driving fun in the weekend. IMHO

I can tell you that the BMW is a great fun to drive, but I am honest enough to tell you that the vast majority of the driving time most people do will not use more than 20% this car's capabilities & potential.

The BMW sells on the ground of SPORTS rather than Luxury whereas the Lexus sells on the grounds of Luxury & refinement. It is best compared to Mercedes I think.
Just read between the lines and the tone of the message. Also, all this back and forth about what the "real" intent of the question was, especially with Rudy, who I think is a true gentleman with all his help on this forum and you will see what I mean.

No offense Lanzaman, but you ask for our opinion and we gave it to you. I guess the question was a little unclear to some of us.

Good luck with your Lexus.

No it doesn't mean that.....Lexus does platform sharing (Lex GS/Toyota Avalon - Mercedes SLK/Chrysler Crossfire) and interchanges many other components and the list goes on and on....on the other hand BMW does not....with no other car....period !

I beg to differ...
are you 100% shore about that
what about the mini and the RR and Range rover and last bmw.

What did they share? I dont think any of them shared any chassis... although the MINI used a lot of the design from the E46 they didnt share the chassis.

BMW does interchange many components between their cars... MINI, 3,5,6,7 there are a lot of shared parts... but I have to agree that is definetly not as much as what Toyota shares between Lexus.

I wouldn't spend so much money on a used car, BMW or not. I would go for a brand new Lexus GS. But you are willing to spend more on a new 530i, of course it would be perfect.

Given that you have not mentioned handling, driving pleasure, agility, fun, original styling or brand heritage on your list of preferences but seem to put an emphasis on flawless, gadget rich luxury and don't care for the badge then you should go for the Lexus. I hope you enjoy it.

My dad who is 70 was looking for a new car and ended up in the new E-Class 320 CDI. He liked the E60 but the Merc suited him better, it's a great car and he's very happy with it. To each his own.

Thank you Poleapart

I did mention that The BMW has in its favour the Space & handling & fuel consumption

To me good handling = agility = driving pleasure which is the Fun

As for brand heritage (ie badge), I don't think people buy cars because of the insignia on the bonnet, but because they actually like the car in the first place. Otherwise every one in the world (who cannot afford a Rolse Royse) would be driving a Mercedes

But thanks for your input, and I will be test driving a 530i M sport tomorrow followed by a GS430.

Good luck with your choice Lanzaman. I know it's a difficult one to make!

After test driving everything, if you're still "on the fence" with which one to get, maybe you should factor in the presence of E60.net into the equation?
