What about putting a sunroof wind deflector? Will it help to reduce wind noise?

Wind deflector is actually known to make metallic rattle.

These seals don't last very long and even though it may look ok, the seal will become dried out. This allows excessive noise in the cabin. With a new seal installed you cannot tell the difference with the sun shade opened or closed, as the car becomes very quiet inside. Buying a deflector makes no sense and besides looks ridiculous. But if you decide to get one, replace your seal anyway.

Just replaced my seal this morning. The difference in cabin noise is amazing. It took me an hour to do, but honestly, 45 minutes was spent cleaning the old adhesive really well. And also, it's not an entirely exact science. It's just tape and rubber. But try to not have a gap between the top of the seal and the roof. A little won't hurt anything though. When the roof is closed, there's some pressure there that will keep the water out.

I finally replaced my sunroof seal today. What a difference it made in reducing noise when the sunroof shade is open. I did a DIY on it.

I have a 2008 535 and had the wind noise and I had the rattle from the wind deflector as well. I bought a genuine BMW seal for <$30 from a dealer that does online sales well and it took 20 min to remove the old one and clean off the glue using Windex then 20 min to install the new one. Was easy. Just make sure when you trim the new one to pair the ends together to do it square at 90 degrees.

After completing the new seal install, I reinitialized the sunroof and that fixed the rattle as well. Basically the roof was not going forward enough to push down the linkage. Mine was rubbing in the center and sounded like china rattling when it was hitting the glass, but after the reset (initialization) - the wind screen now has tons of spare room and is no where near the glass.

I had been quoted $400 from the dealer after being denied a warrantee fix a year and a half ago. What a joke. I wish I had invested the time to understand just how easy this was to correct. The only reason that i finally forced myself to fix it was the rattle. Dumb...... I had just assumed that if it was that much - that it must be a challenge to do. WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I fixed mine this morning following the DIY threads from tonyb635 and balbs and then re-initialized the sunroof. From start to finish it took me about 45 minutes.

One trick that worked very well was pulling the old seal off while heating it a bit with a blow dryer. I started working it off by grabbing the seal and pulling. Once it was started I rolled the glue right up to the seal I had pulled away and then used the hair dryer to warm it up while I pulled the seal at a 90 degree angle. As I pulled the seal the glue came off with it. Cleaning up the edge afterwards was super easy. I just used some diluted Simple Green on a paper towel and then wiped dry with a clean rag. Putting the new seal on was a piece of cake.

Hi,

I replaced that seal on My E60, 2008 two days ago. It took me about 1 hour all together - removing old one and installing new. Yes, wind noise almost gone, but not completely...
Also, the problem, that I can clearly hear all outside sounds in the car, like sunroof is open. On my previous E60 sound insulation was much better. Any ideas, what else can affect on silence in the cabin?

I Managed to misalign new seal slightly -twice. It is not that easy to put it on place. Problem is that one piece os seal is slightly above surface and also ending ends just together is a bit challenge. Result, my cabin is noisier than before but i must try 3rd time..
