I don't think it is "normal". If you test drive any new '08-'09 5 series, there is no wind noise at all. I took mine in because I noticed on my loaner one time it was perfectly quiet. They replaced the seal, which took care of the problem.....but when i closed the glass from the tilted position one day, it wouldn't shut, just bounce back up. Took it in, and they adjusted the glass, and it closed as normal.....but the wind noise was back Also noticed the wind deflector was up against the glass in the tilted position now, and would rattle. Took it back in for the rattle and and wind noise, and they lowered the deflector, but wind noise is still there, but worse. Service manager is involved now, and said wind noise is not acceptable. Scheduled to take it back in for a 4th time, for another attempt to do the job right. Idiots
maybe i should bring mine in then.. i got it on mine.. and i like to keep the shade open even if the glass is closed to let light in.. otherwise its black in my car.. so i guess this is a common problem.. didnt feel like reading through the whole thread, but has anyone fixed this on there 08 and up?

Interesting thing. My winshield is cracked and I called the dealer to see if they replace them or see who they recommend. The SA told me they don't replace them but to make sure that the person who does replaces the trim pieces as well. He said that if they don't , I could get excessive wind noise. I'm now wondering if the wind noise I'm hearing is due to the cracked windshield and not the sun roof. The crack started from a rock chip at the very edge of the glass up against the side trim pieces. Its being replaced tomorrow so I'll let you know.

As a side note, inusrance does not cover replacing the trim pieces and the glass company assures me that they don't need to be replaced. We'll see.

I left my 530d with the dealer last Friday. The service guy that tested the car thought all that needed to be done was to adjust the glass because he thought the glass was a little proud at the back corner. Of course the dealer didn't have a 5 series with glass sunroof to draw a noise comparison with. The car was in the workshop for 2 hours. I've been driving it since Friday and although it seemed to be an improvement there remains a considerable amount of wind noise. I got the distinct feeling that as it was a warranty issue they were less than eager in dealing with the issue. The BMW dealer and in particular the arrogant service agent left me with a very bad feeling. I'm fast loosing patience with that dealer.

NOT NORMAL, read my previous post!!!!!!!!
Just wanted to say thanks to 530goinon850 for setting me straight. I replaced the seal and the wind noise is gone! It's very easy to replace yourself but I still made some pics for anyone needing a little support.
