I drive a 2007 530d. On rare occassions when the sun shines on this damp island I get to use my sunroof. Sometimes, without opening the glass sunroof, I just slide the cover back to let some light in. With the cover slid back the cabin noise levels increase considerably. There is an offensive level of wind noise. Is this normal? I've checked seals and glass roof seating and all seem OK.

The other half drives a Toyota Amazon and when you slide the sun roof cover back in that there is no change in internal noise levels.

I went to my local dealer and complained - they replaced the sunroof seal (or something like that...) without ANY questions. I did mention that I've read online that it is a common problem - that seemed to solidify the SA's mind to fix the car.

I too have the wind noise, and though annoying I think it's normal.

Funny, when I read that you also have an Amazon I first missed that it was a Toyota and thought it was one of the old Volvos. Made me happy as I also have one! The one on the pic below is not mine though.

NOT NORMAL, read my previous post!!!!!!!!

I'm out of warranty. In fact, I just passed the 100K mark today. Over the past few months, I've been debating with myself if the wind noise was loader. I'm now convinced that it is. I also just got the deflector rattle mentioned in this string. Can the seal replacement be done as a DIY? What about fixing the deflector rattle?

I am still in warranty so I sent an e-mail to the dealership to have the car inspected for the work. I'll advise progress.
I had the same problem and they installed a new seal under warranty, huge difference, very quiet now.

I'm going to bring mine in next week and have this looked at also. I thought it was normal as other cars I've driven did the same thing, especially my 300ZX.

What about fixing the deflector rattle?
On mine...they adjusted the deflector which lowered it. Not sure how they adjusted it.....but before when it was hitting the glass, I could put my fingers up there when the glass was shut, and feel that the deflector was right up against the glass causing the rattle when I would hit a bump. After the adjustment, the space was big enough to get a finger between the deflector and glass with the glass shut.

I'll post up my results after the car goes back for the wind noise

I had this same wind noise issue with my '07 525. It builds up over time and it gets to be very noticeable after a while. In comparison my wife's 2003 Toyota Highlander sunroof is much quieter even after 6 years on the road.

I complained about this to my SA every time I took the car in for service, but never got it resolved. At some point I was considering purchasing one of those plastic wind deflectors that go on the outside, but I was told that they are very difficult to put in and have them stay on after the fact; so I just learned to live with the visor closed. Disappointing on a car of this price?.

Back in Feb my lease on the '07 run out, so I got a new '09 528. Much quieter, but again, this is what I remember my '07 to be when I first got it.

Nope....besides it would kind of defeat the purpose!
