I just found out that stock loudspeakers are very cheap for US standard audio:

01 CENTRAL BASS, LEFT HIFI-SYSTEM 1 65136919355 $193.90
01 CENTRAL BASS, RIGHT HIFI-SYSTEM 1 65136919356 $193.90
01 MID-RANGE LOUDSPEAKER HIFI 2 65136930902 $37.66
03 HIFI TWEETER 2 65136919350 $37.66
01 MID-RANGE LOUDSPEAKER HIFI 2 65136930902 $37.66
04 HIFI TWEETER 2 65136919362 $37.66
AMPLIFIER, STEREO/HIFI 1 65126920461 $182.70

By looking at the cost, it's too cheap. It's the cost of BMW part. If it were not sold as BMW part, it'd be way cheaper. As you know cheap loudspeaker will sound very lousy as a matter of fact.

The amplifier is just $182.70 which is not expensive at all. What you pay is what you get.

Harmon Kardon audio gear is not high-end, by any stretch of the imagination. Although, to be honest.... I am absolutely amazed at how low those prices are. I would have expected BMW to mark them up by 600%.

All I know is it sounds fantastic -- as comparison I have M&Ks at home run through Denon and Onkyo components...

I'm happy with the highs and mids but the bass could use some work.
My old car has a custom system with three amplifiers (two driving a sub in the trunk) and the difference in lows is pretty amazing. I just don't trust the guys who installed it to wire into this car. I orderred an Infinity Basslink from Bavarianautohaus but the wiring harness didn't fit. They haven't been able to locate one for the new E60. JJ.

Cool. I gues sthe point I'm trying to make is that the system sounds great - but an audiophile could always find something to upgrade

I'm not unhappy with the premium sound and I'll get the package on the next car I lease. The large center speaker is a nice touch.

I didn't expect the same level of low-end because you simply can't compensate for lower wattage.

I was a bit fried that BAH didn't check their harness before shipping it to me though. JJ.

What is the best way to improve the sound quality in a stock stereo system without tickering with the IDrive and without voiding the BMW warrenty??

HAHA......

Mess with the EQ settings.

That's about it. Anything else you do will void warranty.
