Hey folks, did a search and could not find an answer. I have the stock air filter still in my car and noticed it had a 1/4 in. of sponge type material glued on the bottom of it. This morning, I just ripped that black thing off. I was just curious if that thing had an important job being there?

I also took the charcoal filter from the top of the box. I took it for a run and seems more responsive. Also when reving it, you can really hear it suck air. To me, it seems like a good mod but did not know if I am causing any kind of damage to the engine. Thanks.

1, The sponge is there to stop the filter moving and ensure a tight fit.
2, You will damage your engine if you suck up rubbish without the filter!!
3, It will feel more responsive because you are getting more airflow, which is why we buy aftermarket filters to increase airflow, hope this answers your questions?

Thanks Rislar........Just to confirm, taking off the black sponge will do no harm? I am in the process of changing the filter either to K&N or BMC, just cant decide. thanks again......

Thanks Rislar, now I know how much it can improve performance by replacing the filter. Can only imagine how much more it can improve with a RPI Scoop. Cheers....

Im not sure you'll make much gains from both, maybe 5bhp as its more of a placebo effect, each to there own though bud
