Now that the capitalist principles of survival of the fittest have sealed the fates of the big three car companies, do you think we can collectively stop making cars like the one I described above. Maybe a new GM will design and produce smaller, more driver oriented cars with features that work in harmony with driving (like navigation and lane departure warnings), not against it (3 cupholders per seat, curb weights close to an adult elephant and torque-rich giant lifeless gas guzzling motors to push them along effortlessly). We need to build cars with more manual transmissions to involve the driver and smaller engines that need to be revved which are better on gas and have more soul. In other words, make cars that are tools to experience the roads with, not automated lazyboys.
Unfortunately, the market for cars such as those you describe is close to zero... BMW won't even import its own small 4 cylinder cars - excellent cars it already has in its product inventory - into the US for this very reason. Stick shift accounts for a tiny proportion of sales. More to the point, it's not that the Big 3 didn't make a good car, GM and Ford at least had some product that would stand up against their import competition. The American middle class consumer, however, is highly aspirational and places a lot of value on kerb appeal. A BMW, MB or Audi projects a message to your neighbors that a GM doesn't. Not every buyer chooses a BMW because of their excellent driving dynamics. Our members here do - but we're a tiny proportion of BMW's customer base. GM's cars aren't awful per se, far from it some cases, but its their past over reliance on trucks and SUVs that got these guys into their current predicament more than the current quality of the passenger car line up.

Hard to believe that a new 550 Sport performs better than a '92 Town Car pushing 150k on the odo. You're going to have to provide more proof, because I'm not buying it.

And that, my friend, is the heart of the issue. Perhaps if he had planned them a little better, we may all have been better for it.

The problem is that in 2000 we all elected a former alcoholic coke head with daddy issues, so the first chance he got he tried to exact revenge and do what his daddy couldn't do - get rid of Saddam. The problem arose when he lied to get the war started, then proceeded to piss on the constitution by advocating torture. As I have said many times before - I am a proud veteran AND someone who was in the WTC on 9/11 and no I don't think Bush handled ANYTHING well. He failed as a president, an American, and as a man, he is truly pathetic.

As for the big 3? Remember all those cars we are so nostalgic about? The Camaros, Chevelles, '59 Cadillacs? People tend to fporget how crappy they really were. They didn't handle well at all, they had constant reliability issues, they had horrible build quality. No, what sealed the fate of the big 3 was simple - as soon as good quality imports started arriving here they were doomed. Because in response the notion that a BMW impresses the neighbors more than a GM. it goes deeper than that it doesn't have to be a BMW it can be a Camry and still a better overall car than a Chevy.

Very true - and a very high percentage of German neighbors have a BMW, Audi, or MB in their parking space not because of looks or performance but simply due to preference (kind of like why Chevy owners hate Fords, etc.) To them these cars are far too common.

The irony is that GM vehicles (the Corvette in particular) are sold there and delivers the same affluent "message"

Well, I think that since he is NOT a nitwit, a dolt, and imbecile, like his predecessor - he will be fine. BTW, do you really consider one 88 yr old going ape shit "domestic terrorism"? I am a minority (hispanic) and if THAT's the best the skin heads have, I am not worried at all -they are all inbred morons anyway (maybe THAT's why they like Bush, they can identify)
