I had identical issue this past summer, dealer changed steering rod and problem has not resurfaced since, I will try to find service records and post part number if I can.

Every time I turned steering wheel about a quarter turn either right or left I heard this creaking noise plus I felt a
thump or notching effect from the steering wheel. I posted about this problem at the time, might be in dealer service section of this forum , sorry can't remember. Will look for service records when I can.

Ok, being the nice guy that I am , I went to my car and retrieved my work order.

I quote from work order

Complaint: Knocking at the steering wheel

Cause: Loose in steering wheel

Correction: Replace Steering Shaft

Part number: 32-30-6-768-762

Work was done on July 13/05 , had around 6700 miles on the car at the time, it is now 6 months and 9,000 miles later and problem has not come back.

I've had both the light grinding sound from under the hood and the rubbing noise from the steering wheel when turning it... The dealer (when I was living in Germany) said a software issue was causing the grinding, and I thought he was crazy but he was right - a software update fixed it (or maybe he just banged the steering rack with a wrench a few times, you never know). Sorry, can't remember which versions were involved...
I still get a little rubbing noise from turning the steering wheel, but I have decided to live with it. And the squeaky driver's seat. Just turn up the L7...

I have a jerky grinding noise when the steering wheel moves into position upon startup and then again when I shut the car off... it moves up and away with a jerky grinding noise. My 1999 528 did the same thing.

The 1999 was fixed by replacing the worm gear.

My dealer verified the issue on my 2005 545 and has diagnosed it as a defective upper steer column mechanism. Scheduled to have it replaced next week.

I also notice a slight knocking sound when turing at very slow speeds, like backing out of my driveway. My SA thinks it related to the same issue.

I have a 2004 530i with step, premium package and cold weather package. Since almost day one I have noticed a rubbing or squeaking noise from the steering wheel when I turn the wheel. I only notice it at speeds below about 15mph -- above that it is drowned out by road and engine noise. The shop foreman at the dealership diagnosed a defective slip ring and replaced it. The noise was entirely gone for about 3-4 weeks, only to return. Since then he has replaced the slip ring three more times (I kid you not), and each time the noise disappears completely for a few weeks. He e-mailed BMW Technical for more information but got none.

Has anyone else had this problem and/or found a long-term cure?
A small but aggravating problem.

Have your dealer fix it!

Do not give up!

Add me to the list :\

I'm now getting a low grinding noise when turning my steering wheel at low speeds, I'll have the dealer check into it :\

I have a 2004 525i and I too have that squeaking noise at low speeds. Any resolutions? I brought it in to the dealer and they wouldn't cover anything because I put in sport springs in. They saying it caused it. Now I wonder if they where just bullshiting me if other people are having the same issue.

If it is a really a defect then why doesn't BMW step up to the plate and recall the vehicles to fix the god darn problem?
