Steering Knock in Column, 3rd time in the shop
I would love to know how does my steering column keep breaking and causing a clunk?
Car goes in Monday for the 3rd column I cant beelive this, they are lasting about 6-8 weeks for each unit that is replaced.
Crazy, anyone have this issue yet?

When you turn the wheel you hear a joint knock, like somethkng is not tight.
When you are parked and you turn the wheel left to right you feel the knock through the steering wheel
When you drive and take turns, Clunk clunk,
its crazy

Are these AS-equipped cars we're talking about?
My AS rack was replaced 4 weeks ago and has now restarted clunking, too. If this becomes a chronic problem, it will discourage owners from keeping these cars beyond warranty periods, I'd assume. Racks are not inexpensive to replace.

I experienced the same knocking on my 04 545I sport 6speed. Had my dealer here in Chicago, IL take a look. They determined that the steering rack needed to be replaced. The performed the work and the knocking is gone. Have your dealer look into it.

I have the same problem on my 2004 545, am waiting for the part to arrive, and waiting, and waiting and waiting.
I have had over 25 new cars in my driving career. I have had my 545 for just about 3 months now and it has been back to the dealers more times than any other car that I have owned.
Damn, even a SAAB that I had some years back behaved better than my 545.
It's a good thing that I love the look of this car so much or it might show up at the bottom of a lake somewhere.
By the way , the engine had to be replaced after 24 days of ownership. The new engine is the only thing not giving me problems now.
I think the most incredible thing is how all these problems are so wide spread.
I come to this forum and read about the problems and say to myself, yup I have this problem, yup got that one too, and on and on and on.
It is amazing how BMW get's away with all this crap and keeps selling cars.
Guess it has to do with the "Ultimate Driving Experience" lol.
