Sport Lux sedan - AWD or not ?

Just wanted to thank everyone for the input, it's nice to get the feedback and opinions. I am intrigued by the new 535xi coming out later this year. I will likely wait until it comes out, in the hopes that the model makes it to Canada....

Spend a few days on the Glacier in Innsbruck. Lots of BMW's. None x-drive.
Lots of snow tires on rear wheel drive cars.
Or they get audi's.
Gas is half here and we just drink it like its nothing.
It was nice to not see sloppy huge SUV's for a few weeks. No pick up trucks either.

You guys are lso ucky that you even have the option of the 4wd 5 series sedans - we don't get this option in the UK. I have made the move to a 535d and love it but wish it could have been 4wd after a couple of Audi's.
By the way, I agree with the comment about winter tyres - AWD is useless in snow without winter tyres. With it, it's simply phenominal. I don't agree with the manual point though. Yes, I prefer the manual for ultimate control in all conditions except snow. In snow I find that the creep you get with a steptronic box can get you away on the worst surfaces (mind you the creep behind the wheel can have an effect too!
).

You can't beat the fun of RWD, which is the perfect reason to get a bimmer in the first place. No?
Snow tires aren't that bad to mess with and you can run with a different look in the winter and preserve your summer rims. I notice reduced grip with my aggresive winter setup (LM-25 runflat Blizzacks), but oddly me likes the back-end moving around and the slight 4 wheel drifts. You really feel the balance of the car. The traction control works quite well.
Of course very deep snow is a calling card for AWD. But here in Chicago, roads are generally dry and clean of snow for most of the winter. So we get to revel about our snow tires a whopping 5 times a year.
