Good question. Can't really compare over here in the UK. What's the basic spec of a E60 in Germany?
From my previous experience of driving E46s (320iSE and 325iSE), all 6 cylinder E46s were SE in the UK.
However the 4 cylinders (eg. 318s) had both standard and SE.
The differences if I recall between a 318i and 318iSE were:-
Dimming rear view mirror.
Park Distance Control.
16inch alloys.
Centre Arm Rest
Colour coded Door handles.
This may have changed recently of course.

Maybe the "S" does stand for SMG. I'll have to confirm that mine has the S as well.
In the days of the E39 -- I saw a couple today and as much as I loved that car when it was current, I have to admit it's looking a little old and boring now -- the 6-speed was called a 540i and the automatic was called a 540iA. Maybe the E60 is using a similar convention: 545i for the 6-speed, 545iA for the automatic, and 545iS for the SMG?
