When the sport package is added to a car, is the official designation now the "s".
Like 530is or 545is, etc.? I used to have a 1983 320is.

Or will there be a newer model released with some body mods or other changes that would designate it as an "s" model.

I'm not positive, but I don't think the "s" is used anymore.

This discussion just came up a couple days ago in another thread here on this board and we were not sure if the s is for sports or for smg.
Somebody who has an SMG equipped 545 read on his door jamb 545iS - and 545iA is automatic transmission, so the S could stand for SMG. But we were not sure...

I believe the cars that have the S added to their badge are usually cars "sportified" by BMW, as opposed to BMW Motorsport. E.g. the E30 320iS, E30 318iS or the X5 4.8iS? AFAIK these are cars that have slightly modified HP outputs and so forth.

Apart from these models, I'd say the S ("sport") and A (automatic) or T (touring) designations are only valuable in, say, a sales advertisement and with an added explanation. However they don't seem 'official' and are probably not used by BMW.

The discussion Iceman is referring to had to do with the model designation stamped in the door jamb.

If I remember correctly, we need someone with a 6-speed (clutch) & sport package to look at their jamb and report what back is stamped there.

I would think it would be 545iS. Now, what would a 545 with Steptronic and SP have stamped? There are some out there so would someone please take a peek.

You're right. They've used somewhen in the past but are officially not doing it anymore.
Hwever, car enthusiasts and insiders still use 'em.
It's nteresting when you talk to BMW ppl, they use to talk about their cars in the E-code (E60), and when using the regular model names/designations they ARE using those A's, T's, etc... Officially they are not in use anymore. That's right.
Just like "E60" is no official name or model designation... It's just for internal use...

That makes a case for the 545iS as the code for SMG. Now we could confirm if someone has a door jamb with 530iS stamped who has SMG.

In UK, there is the "SE" suffix, does it mean Special Edition? or Sport Edition?
