You should consider joining the BMWCCA. $40 annual membership fee gets you lots of good stuff, including terrific magazine (Roundel), interesting meetings, discounts at dealers, $1,000 back when you buy your new 5-er, and opportunities to participate in track events, including autocross. Maybe a few rounds of the cones would help you get that feeling of the potential of the E60?

ExGman - BMWCCA 374235
word.

just took the 545 to lime rock track today with the bmwcca. got up to 110 on the main straight and 80 on a few corners.

cornering in this car is pretty tricky, being such a big heavy sedan. also the rft's and active steering suck on the track. this was my first time on the track with the e60, and it took a while to get comfortable, but by the end of the time i got my rhythm back and even toasted some e46's on the corners.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't believe it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just got another speeding ticket!! This one for driving 12MPH (20KMH) !!!!! on a (once again) deserted road at 11pm on the way to the cottage in northern Ontario (north of Toronto, Canada).

12mph over the limit !!!!!!!!!!!!!

At this point, as the original poster...with my original problem!!!! I feel completely ridiculous!!

I think I'll put this one under..."The Law Of Attraction"...!!!

To all the posters who live next door or close to the Autobahn...well........I really don't care for you much!! lol...just kidding...you guys are incredibly lucky!!

In conclusion....I believe that there is a very fine line between "enjoying" a performance vehicle and truly driving according to traffic laws.

A real dichotomy.......lol

In Idaho (US) there is a significant disparity between state police and motorists, which is a good thing, and as such, facilitates finding the upper limits of a cars performance. On a business trip coming back from Ketchum/Sun Valley larea last week, on US 20/26, I was passing cars in the 80 to 85 mph range heading West. Coming over a pass, and into a straight strecth, I discovered a motorcyle following me about 15 yards back, an also duplicating my passess. On one long stretch, I passed a semi trailer, which are usually around 105 feet in length. After reaching the tractor portion of the rig at around 110, I just kept the foot down, to see if the bike rider had any balls, and would stay on me. The 550i hit the VNE speed of 150 fairly fast, and I will be damned if the motorcyle, which was a Ducati, PASSED ME! This experience has prompted me to begin a search for a program that will eliminate the electronic speed control. Been doing some physics calculations on the car, factoring in the CD, and the horespower, and try and guess what the theoretical top end of the car would be.

Should be around 175-178 mph. Did you actually hit the limiter though?

If the limiter just shuts down the fuel supply, yes, because I had pedal left, and pushing it back further into the floor made no difference. Almost the same as my F350, when it hits 97, it just stops. I have never found the upper limit of the Porsches, the 964 went to 167 before operator limited (actually wife) and the 993 ran to 188 before a vibration terminated the test. There is a formula, that takes HP, weight, and frontal CD, and predicts terminal velocity fairly well. I'm just having a tough time finding an accurate CD for the 550i.

The limiter can not be removed totally, as it requires a value to be set at the top end.
Mine is lifted and the limiter set to 295 km/h which my car will never reach. Was just part of the remap on my car.

You need to open the ECU for it, though to hook it up to a programmer

By the way, I did a GPS timed 172mp/h, so the 550i should certainly be capable of that if not a tad more. My 535d runs around 325 bhp and 640NM torque

Bad Luck Chap,

Us Americans, with our 55 mph highways, need only buy a Dinan software upgrade and the limiter is removed 100%. Thing is, it is somewhat useless in the U.S. except for those once a year confrontations - my last one was with an AMG S55 in my 01' 740i sport (301 bhp which hit 168 with the limiter removed. It was just fantastic to see the face of the Merc driver when he hit the 155mph wall when his limiter kicked in.

I hear and feel your pain nwilliams, myself just got convicted for 2 speeding tickets this week. Both on a 50kph (30mph) road late at night, and I wasn't doing any spirited driving at all!

Just really tired getting off work (late at 3am) and wanting to get home, the cops caught me off guard, both tickets were for20kph over. OK I was guilty, but I feel so unfair. The moral of the story is even if you are not doing spirited driving, cops are still there to prey drivers down. Ones like me who forgot to watch the speed sign while the comfy bed is all on my mind.

Didn't feel a thing in my e60...

Why bad luck ? Mine is set to 185 mp/h which my car doesn't hit anyway and if it should we just raise it further.
I am not even sure if Dinan removes it totally or if they also just raise it to a value you'll never reach, which to me effectively is the same thing, anyway.

In World Record Breaking circles a true record can only be claimed if a speed is measured over a 1 mile or 1 kilometer course and a return run is made within an hour of the vehicle setting off on the first run?

I drove my friends Audi S8 to a personal record of 168.3mph on a Scottish bypass making two runs with the average speed measured from a Magellan handheld GPS unit over a 1 mile course. My ?record? time was set late at night in cool temperatures after a big local football match (most of the police would have been in the city taking care of the drunks!).
