Not really very smart (of your friends), wearing the emergency plastic key out like that for a purpose for which it's not intended.

Besides, I'm not sure if it has any limitations on use like opening the trunk etc.

But again, it's not a VALET KEY anyway.
It appears that it's not a valet key. It's provided by BMW as an emergency key in the event of losing an original.

If the trunk is locked with the key, the release button won't function...

My plastic key reads "For engine start use only with adapter in glovebox / in toolbox in the truck"

I found the adapter in the glovebox but I could NOT find the adapter in the toolbox. However, is toolbox = where the firstaid pack is located?

Please help?

And then those who are so predisposed, give the key to the valet?

I have two plastic keys in my wallet currently - e60's & e34's. They are to start the car if you don't have your "regular" keys. They are not valet keys. I also use them when I go surfing. I lock my car and put the plastic key in a pocket of my wetsuit. I am concerned the "regular" keys will be damaged by the salt water.

You answred your own question... there's one adapter... its EITHER in the glove box or tool kit. If you found it in once place you wont find it in the other.
