Software Version
The Daytime Running Lights are the two inner lights out of the four total lights. That's actually the only thing those two inner lights are used for because the highbeams are the same as the lowbeams. I'm not sure why BMW didn't just have DRLs activated on all cars. I had to pay $70 to get mine activated.

The angel eyes only come on when you have the headlights turned (either in automatic mode or ON mode) or when you switch to parking lights.
The DRLs can't be turned on or off with any switch, it's enabled by programming through the dealer. Once it's enabled, it stays on whenever your car is on and only turns off when the main headlights come on.
I just learned from another post that once the DRLs are enabled, if you switch to parking lights to get the angel eyes to come on, the DRLs (inner lights) still stay on. If that's the case, I may leave mine disabled because I would like to occasionally have only the angel eyes on, nothing else. Especially once I figure out how to upgrade them to brighter, whiter lights.

I had the "latest" version installed last week. Think it's 19.02.
Notable difference-RDS works
Subtle differences: If audio left on when car turned off, it now comes on whether or not I've accepted lawyer screen. As non NAV owners have said, thier lawyer screen goes off after 15sec., NAV cars still need to accept. Also, Idrive screen seems to be dimmer, adjusted to ambient light better.
Havent noticed any active steering changes as others have indicated.

I am taking my car for service next week, I want to upgrade software. What should I tell my SA in order to get a free software update? My last update was around april 2005, back then I complained about flase FTM warnings and that justified the update.
What fixes are there in the latest version?

The way to check your software version is to use the hidden iDrive diagnostics screens. You can activate this by 1) pressing and holding the iDrive controller for 10 seconds 2) clicking the controller 3 right 3 left 1 right 1 left 1 right; and 3) pressing the controller once.
On non-Nav cars, go to the Versionkontrolle menu item and scroll down to the last item. There you will see an entry that looks like this: I-05-09-510-050509. The first 7 digits of that series of numbers (in this case 05-09-510) can be compared to TIS bulletin SI B 61 14 03 which can be found
here. Each CIP release corresponds to one of these target data strings. Note that some software releases do not contain changes for the E60, so the target data string will not change between CIP publications. But, in general, you can narrow your software down to at least the major version (e.g., CIP 19.XX).
For Pro-Nav vehicles, the access procedure is the same but the screens are slightly different. The screen is called ECU, the first menu item on the left side is Applikation. Look for the last item on the right hand screen which has the target data string following the string SID_HIDDEN_VERSION=.

Applikation - list ten items none of which look anything close to a Target Status Data #
the remining items under ECU are:
C-HOST
C-TUNER*
C-ASC
C-GATEWAY
C-TMC*
Position*
None of these has anything that looks like a recognizable number.
Those marked with * have other pages that can be viewed by going to right window and pressing Next or Prev.
Any thoughts on why I cannot see this SID_HIDDEN_VERSION item?
