Hi guys,

My E60 is in BMW in Edinburgh gettin a software upgrade on the gearbox (this is what i was told it was to go back in for) so i get a phone call today updating me with what is going on, i was to also have a new CD player fitted which they were doing.

Apparently the software upgrade crashed half way through and will have to be started again which will now take until tomorrow to complete, he also said it has rendered the car unable to start i.e immobilised, so it got me thinking they arent just updating the gearbox but the whole car so will or is my LCI lights with the V6 cables causing problems with the update????

Thanks for any advice/comments

A Worried Graham.

The software cannot detect the V6 because the lights are passive electrical units. The software can only detect up to the LCM, but the V6 does not touch the LCM or anything else.

BTW Software crashing during an update is common.

Can anyone clarify if these cars need software update and if so why?

Mine is a manual BTW.

Surely they just run on the settings they left the factory with

Sure, it can continue to run on the factory settings. Remember though that at the time it left the factory, the software had all of it's settings tuned to the best of the knowledge that BMW could put behind it. Since then, they've learned a lot more, they've diagnosed thousands of problems and they have a whole heap of better settings that they could switch to. Simply getting a software update can make your performance, economy and reliability improve. I say "can". The changes to the software can sometimes be to change how the engine works so that a particular part isn't stressed so much and won't fail (whereas with the original settings it failed earlier than they'd expected).

The reasons I got my software updated were a bit more obvious than those though. I was running 2004 s/w and the newer 2009 version made some nice improvements to the professional navigation (giving a 3D perspective view and a context menu on the left). My other reason was to get MP3 support enabled for the in-dash CD player.
