Popped in to the dealer to find out about upgrading my SW so my in dash cd player could play MP3. Was told around the ?250 mark.
Anyway, a few days later my car started having a few weird faults - Critical Battery warning in iDrive, disconnecting of phone, radio or cd just switching off for a few seconds randomly and then my rear PDC failed and I reversed into a wall (yes I am a dumbass, but we learn to rely on these things)
Felt like such a scam artist when I ended up speaking to the same service agent about the problems - he looked at me with that "you are just trying to score a free SW upgrade" look . I swear these problems happened.
Long story short..they upgraded my SW a few days ago and added/activated MP3 for free. Top Guys!!!
The new SW is awesome, dont know what version it is because I forgot to ask for a copy of the service notes but am going back tomorrow so will find out and post here.
Car still had the original SW from when it was manufactured apparently..find it hard to believe, but it was the old brown screen and now its the new fancy silver and black
Main differences I have noticed are
- More vehicle setting options
- Quicker phone connecting in bluetooth
- new display options for Nav (3d view etc)
- This is the strange one...I now have more POIs in my navigation. Thought these were on the DVD but apparently not (or maybe the new SW just makes them accessible) but it told me "no data" for airports before the SW upgrade and now I have all the main European ones
its only been a few days and I need to play properly but these are what I have noticed so far.

If your software was that old, you may see climate control working properly now too. If it is the standard system. Eg the fan will speed up to reach desired temperature. Didn't do that on the old 'faulty' software.
