The steering is computer controlled (or perhaps computer assisted is a better definition). There is a 'map' of data that defines how much extra angle assistance is given based on certain inputs, primarily the speed. BMW seem to have been fiddling with this map consistently...

Now that would be a popular software upgrade! I'm afraid such fundamental changes are not usually part of the BMW coding... (Although maps are probably tweaked for 'issues')
