I bought my 545i last October 2004, and my question is what kind of software I have installed right now is it 15.1 or 17.1, and how can I check this??

I think you can get the CIP version identifier through an iDrive diagnostic screen. You'll have to search but I think I saw how to get that screen posted. Note that this identifier won't be "15.1" but instead will be something like "E060-05-09-530". Anyway you can look that number up against the SI bulletin that's been posted that lists all of the software issues fixed by the various CIP versions. That bulletin includes this more cryptic version identifier (known as "Target Data Status") but unfortunately it isn't unique to a particular CIP version for some reason. Sorry, I've never tried the iDrive diagnostic screen so maybe this isn't of much help (or even completely right, well the bulletin part is, I posted a link to it a week or so ago).

Being that your car is a 10/04 build your CIP version is likely either 15.2 or 16.0. During September 2004 there was a rash of CIP version releases: 13.2, 13.3, 15.0, 15.2, and 16.0, at least accrding to the bulletin. I assume that your car was built with or updated at the VPC to either of the last 2. Note that 16.0 didn't fix any problems so must have been new functionality or simply was 15.2 rolled up into the next major CIP distribution (E060 applies to E60, E61, E63, and E64 cars).

In my sig u can see my build date was Jan 05 & delivered with 15.2. U could not be higher than 15.2 unless u upgraded at dealer later.

my car wasn't in the dealer yet, it's schedule first time for service next friday, so I'm make sure to ask my dealer about it.
