beewang is right, they don't reset the computer so that I'm still due for regular change at around 11,000 miles, according to the computer...

teriyaki88, some of us are just old school about oil changes.? Seriously, the real reason I did an early one was to get fresh oil after the break-in period.? No real basis in fact for doing it, but read that sometimes after break-in, small metal shavings can be in the oil.? Figured the $80 was piece of mind since I own not lease and will have this car for quite a while (I hope!)? From now on I'll do the annual or whenever the computer says for free.

I think the metal shvings thing was an M3 only issue. For the M3 they recommend and pay for the early oil change. Must have something to do with the higher compression / higher revs, maybe tighter tolerances.

I'm also in SoCal and actually bought my 545i from South Bay BMW (at their new facility which is pretty nice). I also plan to change my oil early after the break in for it is worth the peace of mind.

I called Santa Monica and South Bay and they both charge around $150 for a simple oil change (no meter reset). If you want to reset the meter as well(as I had an older 328i that was past service contract) it will cost you $250!

I agree that this is a total rip-off but it's getting harder to find trust worthy mechanics that have all the latest tools and knowledge of the latest models and who have the ability to reset the meters.

Let us know what you end up doing.

As beewang and kscarrol pointed out, if you change your oil early, you do NOT want to rest the computer.

Humm I'm afraid to ask how much it would be to change the oil at my dealer or at a local dealer...

Anyone know?

Long Beach BMW
New Century BMW
Assael BMW

Also when did you guys change it? right after break in at 1250 or like maybe 4-5K miles?

I can, but why would you want that??!! By resetting the computer means that he will not be able to get free oil change when it reaches the normal time.

Cool, I understand but.... Can you describe the reset process for those of us that don't get free oil changes?

We are talking about the computer on the car that tells when to bring the car in for service. When you bring the car in for service, the mechanic resets the computer so that it starts counting down toward your next service. We don't want that reset so that we end up w/ our first service at 16,000-18,000 miles instead of the 11,000-12,000 miles that my car is now telling me.

I did my first oil change at 4,000 miles.
