Smooth Stops... Is it possible?

That's weird
I don't have this problem. The jerk comes when I accelerate from 0 mph especially at a stoplight
. I do brake gradually though.

@Sergey: Do bear in mind that "Sport" mode is available as a program even with the car in "D". There's 4 auto box shifting programs (XE, E, S, XS from less to more aggressive) and the box chooses one as you go depending on various parameters (accelerator position, speed of car, pitch and yaw movements, ...). Pushing the lever to DS only selects the 'XS' program permanently. If others drive less gently than you do, they may stop with the car in S or XS mode.
Not anymore. Long gone. Sport within "D" did originally exist on my 2005 545. Gone after upgrade to version 17 of the software. It was a fun mode and I miss it the most. Much more than AS.
stop sooner and don`t press the brake so hard that what I do to get a smooth stop, unless I drive very fast then I have to brake hard.
ppl say how come my brake pads last over 4 years well this is the trick, do brake last min.

My 535d does it too, but then again so did the other 2 I test drove and the 530d hire car I had also did it!...I just thought it was they way they were!
I agree though, you shouldn't have to "drive around" the problem! In my opinion its the only thing that lets the car down.

I have the same problem for over two years, which has nothing to do with the brakes, and everything to do with the transmission/engine. The added RPM of the engine, as described above, causes the vehicle to surge/pulse when coming to a stop. Driving in manual, also described above, and shifting into M1 after completely stopping will alleviate the issue. Ditto for shifting into neutral. Nevertheless, the issue should not occur in vehicles of this caliber.

No problem with mine. 06 550 SMG. Funny thing is that alot of people talk about the quality concerns of SMG, but I keep on seeing issues with the step. I havent had any problems with SMG, slamming or rough stop. Knock on wood...

Today I paid more attention to the shift point into first. At 10-5 mph the car stays in 2nd gear with the RPMs at 700. Once you hit 5mph, the car down shifts into 1 and idles at 500RPM. This supports my statement about the shift initiating the stutter. From 5-0mph, the car stutters like the RPMs are too low. I also notice a slight rocking at full stop. For a lack of better word, rough idle. I wouldn't exactly call it rough as you can barely feel it. If you have the radio loud enough and just go by feel, you can tell when the car is on or not. Again, for a car of this caliber, it shouldn't be an issue.
