For the second time in 4 months my SMG locked after receiving the dreaded Bong!? When I reached a traffic stop at West 56th the car just died.? I could not restart as the shifter was in neutral but the instrument cluster was locked in 5th gear.
BMW Assist called for a tow requesting a flatbed but they sent two regular issue tow trucks, both were sent away.? Finally got a flatbed to my location 2 hours later!? It should be noted that Manhattan BMW was only 2 blocks from where I broke down!? Not a pleasant experience.
The last time I took my car to BMW for the same issue they reloaded the latest software, version 17.? It was fine until this morning.? It will be interesting to see what they blame this latest incident on.
Also, when I arrived at BMW there was another 545i on another flatbed with the same problem!? He was towed from New Jersey.? His car was locked in 4th not 5th.? The service advisor upon seeing both cars on flatbed trucks stated, "Oh man, what the heck is the deal with these 545's."? I told him he didn't need to ask the two of us that question, rather he should know the answer.
Just another day in Paradise!

The SMG hydraulic pump needs to be replaced.
Been through this nightmare with my E46 M3. Couldn't even shift the car into neutral to flat-bed it ... had to get if lifted onto the truck.

Wow.. Hope it all works out for everybody! I really wanted an SMG and I would have gotten one had it been available for the 525i, just couldn't afford the 530i.

Well, it took the better part of 4 days but my baby's back in MY garage. BMW told the dealer to install the latest software pack to remedy the problem. They did the same procedure for the other guy that visited BMW on the back of a flatbed.
After clearing all the codes the dealer sent an EMail to BMW HQ for their opinion. Hence the upgraded software pack. I needed to reprogram all my settings, bluetooth, etc., when I picked up the car.
The way home was a far better ride than the one last Tuesday. Everything seems to be fine and the car feels great! I have a trip planned to Long Island tomorrow, so this will be a good test of the work performed. I hope I never see my baby on the back of a flatbed again!
Thanks to everyone for the kind words and suggestions.

I got lucky this time. I almost ordered a 530 with SMG. Finally saving extra money on a 525 made sense.
I am sorry to hear all the horrible stories behind smg.

I'm sorry to report that my SMG bonged another transmission fault yesterday! This time I did not have to secure a flatbed, I was able to hobble back to the dealer in first, second and third gear only.
The latest is that the dealer is running some final tests that they will send to HQ. They think it may be the SMG control module but they are waiting on the diagnosis from HQ before proceeding.
I'll advise what the final verdict is when I get my baby back.
