Unhappy SMG Hydralic Unit

Hello guys, I have a 2007 550i SMG with about 89,000 miles.
Fortunately enough this car hasn't had any problem for the past year but this changed last week.

As I was driving a message popped up on the iDrive saying transsmision mailfunction; transmision switched into safe mode and only gears R,N,1-3 are avalible, stopped at the red light, light turn green and I press the gas and the engine revs I look down and the gear had changed to N, tried switching it but wouldn't go to 1 or R . Shut the car off kept trying for an hour than it finally went to 1st gear, took it straight to my local mechanic who specializes in BMW cars.

Now I get a phone call from him saying that he checked the error codes and it showed that there is a leak inside the Hydralic Unit and whenever the temperature gets high inside the SMG computer shuts off and goes to Neutral. I have a third party warranty but they won't cover it since "it's a part outside the transmision". He said only the part costs $4,600 + labor....

I tried searching on google but couldn't find a similiar problem. Anyone has gone through anything similiar to this? And is the SMG Pump inside the Hydralic Unit or it is a diffent part apart from it? Thanks for any help guys..

Type your vin into realoem.com and find the part number for the smg unit for your particular car. Looks like several depending on when it was made. That price is close to retail but when you run it on Tischers web site(getbmwparts.com) its about 3750.00. That will save you some. See if the part number you come up with matches what your indy says.

My SMG pump failed with similar symptoms at about 70k miles. Parts and labor came to about $1100. But I'm not doubting that your guy is right that it's not just the pump. Anyway, my main point is that it was deemed to be a fluke failure, rather than the pump just reached the end of its life. I'm at 172k now with no further problems. I get the SMG fluid changed every 50k with transmission and diff oil. No guarantees, but I doubt that this is just the start of a long expensive tale of woe. Good luck!

SMG clutch plate and a few other parts. I don't remember what I did exactly to fix an M3 SMG but I'll look it up. A few parts and resets. If you don't have a lift you'll need to find someone to do it. You're in safe mode now
I started off with a relay and it did not work so I found the other issues. Pretty difficult without proper BMW cable and software. I think cost a total of $375 or so. I'll find out for you in the next few days just message me.
Do not touch the SMG pump and so forth or you may have a hard time bleeding without the correct procedures and software. Most likely that's not the issue or it would constantly go into N.

Heres what we did:

Clutch Disc, pressure plate, release bearing clutch fork, & output cylinder. all parts came up to about $1100. We found all this out after getting the software to diagnose it from euautohaus then we paid them like $75 to remotely diagnose it. It was worth it. They know exactly what they're doing with the software, at the time i didn't. A dealer price for this would have been like $3800 - $4000

FIrst we tried a simple relay which may have helped but not sure unless we swapped it out again which wasn't worth it at the time since we just glad to have it fixed and didn't want to worry about such a small simple part since it would probably need redone anyway.
