I wondered if you could give me some feedback not only on your smg but the car in general. I am very close to buying an "05 545 with identical options to yours. Any recommendations, warnings? Car has had one owner and has 23,000 miles. Rear tires are shot, how long do yours last? Right now I'm driving a 2001 540i 6 speed and the rears do wear fast.
Well, in my case, I had to drive my wife's Odyssey 2 days out of a week for my business needs. I chose SMG maily for my wife's sake.
Let me make this very clear: SMG as auto sucks!!! However, as manual, it really drives well. The shifting is smooth and quick, much better
than you could ever shift. Especially the down shifts, it will blip to match revs before engaging the next cog.

As far as how it drives, I would say it feels less front-heavy than your E39 540i. So it corners really well (with sport pack) and flat. I also love
the active steering and the comfort seat. Definitely get the comfort seat if you can.

The biggest difference between 545i and your present 540i that you can feel is the solidity of E60's chassis. The uneveness of the road is better soaked
up by the shocks rather than your spine. The drawback of this is this also insulates you from feeling what your tires are telling you about the road.

Regarding the longevity of the tires, I had mine replaced for free at 16,000 miles so I still have a relatively new ones on. For the record, I don't
think run-flats are too bad. They ride very well because the chassis and suspension on E60 is so sophisticated. I would replace them with the same tires if I were you.

Lastly, what price is that car selling? I am planning in selling my car because wife is nagging for a 335i convertible. I have 25K miles right now and I take care of my car. Are you interested????

I think illjay is talking shift speed, not the car's speed. Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're saying vegas, there's not too much we can do to make the E60 SMG shift like the M-car's SMG, is there?

Rudy,
I was referring to shift speed. The SMG is amazingly fast with the Sprint Booster and remapped ECU. I've driven the '08 535i and '08 550i in DS mode and my SMG shifts are quicker. I've yet to drive a LCI-e60 with Sport Auto but I'm betting that my SMG shifts just as fast, if not faster.

Cool, I didn't realize that anyone has addressed the SMG shift times. Do you think the somthing actually altered the transmission software or is it just a by-product of an improved engine response?

I believe the quicker shift times was a by-product of the two mods combined.

You can not imagine how much fun theMG is! In sport mode, the up shifts are so fast that the time gain is indeed signifant.
If you choose it, I believe that you will LOVE it. There is no way for the manual to approach the speed, efficiency and accuracy of gear changes.
I have been using it for 21.000 kilometers and have had not even one single problem!
DON'T go for the manual!!!
