My Ride: 2006 550i SMG

Like I said before, I tried SMG on a 3er...it really sucked, then tried traditional 6spd...it sucked too (extremely long clutch travel). I went ahead and ordered the 6spd with performance package on the blind
and it's awesome...has the M short shifter and a better clutch feel.
On the 550i I have on order, I'm going to give SMG a shot...eventhough I have never driven that combo or even seen one. As long as it works and has a warranty, I have no problems with 1st year models or options that are high tech and offered year after year.

I'd like to know how many SMG drivers would have chosen the stick and how many would have chosen the automatic if SMG wasn't available.? It seems to me that that would be the best indication of whether SMG is a true substitute for a traditional manual transmission.

I have close to 16,000 miles on my SMG and it was also one of the early ones. No problems at all except for my tired facial muscles. All that grinning from ear-to-ear starts to take a toll after a while...

My opinion.? If SMG is so sporting, why doesn't Porsche put the semi-manual gearboxes in their 911 models?

Why does every F1 gearbox use SMG technology?

To be selfish, I wish you didn't get the SMG. I like the exclusivity that comes with SMG. It's a great conversation starter, but valet parkers needs a little briefing when parking your car. I love it though.
In manual mode, SMG will shift a lot smoother than yourself can. Your ego may tell you otherwise, but do observe your occupants head bobbing around next time.![Thumbsup](https://5series.net/forums/images/smilies/imported/thumbsup.gif)

SMG is GREAT.
Driving around feels like ur playing a video game.
The only reason i got this car was because it has SMG. I had the E46 M3 with SMG, loved it. however this SMG is a lotttttt slower than the M3.

Get the conventional 6-speed.
The SMG gearbox on the non-M cars is really a poor incarnation of the BMW SMG technology.

Ipse dixit, right ?
Aristole told it, thus it is tru, isn't it ?
The SMG3 is so a rich incarnation of technology that breaks down every 10k km
