I tend to agree that the issue is likely to be a mechanical fault and not something in software...

Good luck!
Mechanical fault as in too much LC starts for you SMG guys

I've been looking into an e60 SMG, but these transmission problems have me a bit worried! Has anyone heard of a wreck due to these problems? Are these problems on the 545 or on both 545 and 550? Had the same problems in a TL-S that locked up on the highway, not fun since I was found outside the car :nono: Not to sound demanding or anything, but maybe have a topic w/a sticky showing what BMW is doing about this issue or has done? Anyways, great site and thanks for the info.

What do you mean by outside the car? an accident as a result of a lock up?

Never heard of an accident. Seems more of an annoynace than anything. New tranny and all is solved, go for the SMG as you'll love it!

Although the SMG/E60 combination is relatively new and only been around for a couple of years, I'd say that there are way more problem-free and happy owners than there are owners with serious issues.

Don't let the experiences of a few cloud your judgement over what most of us are experiencing with our SMGs...

I agree, the technology is fun and mine is a first month production of any E60 with a SMG, March 2004 and the first year of production for the E60. I have had many problems with my car, but again 2004 was the first year of this model. I had a 1997 E39 and also had many problems as that was the first year for an E39. My 2002 E39 was only in the shop once in two years which was for the scheduled maintenance oil change and I never had a problem during my whole time with it. I think if your getting one now you will be safe.
I absolutely wanted the new body style and the SMG so I have no regrets and would consider getting it again.

It has now happened twice within a few weeks, both times going slow when I came off of the gas. It displayed neutral on the dash, it was in neutral (free reving) but the shifter was in drive position.
Anyone else have this issue?
It happened again, this time there was a large amber exclamation point (by itself, not in a triangle or gear symbol) above the gear display in the dash board. (What is that error message, I could not find reference to it in the manual).
I drove to my dealer later that afternoon and they checked the error codes which showed an error in the DTC control module. They said that they checked the service reports and found nothing related, they also said that there were no other error codes stored. They also said that the DTC module was not reported to control anything with the gear selection but they ordered one and it will be replaced this week.
I already had the transmission replaced because the tranny would lock out of neutral so I could not start the car and It would not always shift when I tried to shift it.

I don't have any regrets either. My car was one of the earliest SMG's too. (Even earlier than yours by a couple weeks.)

I've had absolutely zero issues with SMG on my car and I do make sure to have a lot of fun when I drive it!
