After we got our car from the factory in Munich, we went to France and parked in a garage one afternoon. There were NO remotely located spaces, so we took one of the few that remained.? This was only days after picking up the car for the very first time.

Well, after returning from a nice lunch what do you think was on the driver's door!!!!

A door ding!!!!! ? ? <_<? ?

The spaces there were incredibly tiny, but you'd think people who park there would be experienced in avoiding those things. But then again, many cars in France have extensive 'in-the-field' sheet metal mods.

I'm going to try one of those guys who does the Dent Wizard type work some day...

8 months and no dings for me either.

As with other posters I park in left field or next to another nice car. A funny thing happened as a result of this. I had to go to a crowded funeral and the parking lot was packed. Luckily I found an end space between a curb and a shiny new 2005 Corvette. I took the space and said to my wife "The Corvette guy is just as worried about dings as me."

Inside the funeral home I ran into a distant cousin and we started catching up and it turns out the 'Vette was his. He loved the 530 and I admired his car too. We discussed a test drive swap. Hasn't happened yet, but I'd like to drive the Corvette - 400hp, HUD, six speed. I need to call him.

FYI for those of you who, like me, reside in the NYC tri-state area and get gas in the full-service only Garden State: about half of the gas station attendants don't bother to place the gas cap on top of the green holder, but instead, just let the gas cap go. This results in a nice, hardly-noticeable-by-anyone-but-you-dent right under the gas door. I just noticed that ding the other day and it made me, well, less than happy. For whatever it's worth, I now tell the attendant not to open the gas door, and I do it myself. That's my only ding.

I never use full service... valet service... automated car wash... anything that requires someone else touching my car... unless its the dealer... which i have no choice then.

Wait until BMW has its' version of MB's Alu-Beam paint...Then it will be really difficult to repaint damaged areas.? The pigments in the paint are incredibly small so it creates a look as though the paint is like 'molten metal', like the paint is almost wet...From what I've heard it looks AMAZING! It should be an available option on MB cars in about 2 years.? Let's hope BMW is going to be doing the same ...MB was showing it at the Detroit Auto Show -

"Both the Vision R and Vision B show cars are painted in a newly developed ALU-BEAM paint that looks more like polished aluminum than traditional silver paint. Mercedes-Benz is the first automaker worldwide to use this innovative process, which makes use of 100 to 300 nanometer pigments to create the realistic metal-finish effect. The company intends to develop the new paint technology for eventual use on production vehicles."

I saw the MB concepts at the auto show. The paint is way cool. I've also seen some one-off custom cars buffed up to look not just like metal, but really mirror-sheen. It is awesome.

I've always been surprised more freak-rich people don't have custom cars made with exposed, polished metal (like brass or chrome panels). Annoying to drive behind, I suppose. Impossible to keep clean, but hey, that's what servants are for.

Wait a minute...with ED wouldn't BMW's insurance cover the repair?

Good point, but I think I remember that the guy who took our car for shipping marked down the door ding and told me that the BMW insurance will not cover 'normal wear' on the car, which includes door dings, hood chips and minor windshield chips. Just 'accident' stuff etc.

but it seems like it should.

No luck here. I got a couple of good size dents in the driver's side door about 2 months after I got the car. I always try to park far out in parking lots, but that also seems to attract other cars. When I came back out to my car I had found that someone had pushed a shopping cart into the door. It's fixed now, but I still can't get over it.

Hi elektrik:

Sorry to hear about shopping carts dings in your BMW door! I know what you mean I am always parking way out also, and I find myself pushing other peoples left behind Shopping carts back in the store, (I am afraid of what happened to your BMW would happen to mine too,,and it still could happen with these stray shopping carts!)

By the way, can you share how much those dings in your door cost to get repaired?

Did you carry in back to a BMW Dealer, or where for the body paint work?

And does the new paint work match the rest of your BMW's paint?

(I have a small scratch on my passenger door that need to be fixed , and the body shop I took it to wants $455.00, because the body shop manager says he goes by BMW E60 spec's and my entire door paint will have to be stripped, prepared and repainted with 3 coats of paint and a clear coat, etc! I am going to take it for some more estimates first,I know our BMWs are high class auto's but 455.00 to fix a tiny scratch on a door?)

Thanks,
Raymond Presley

It could be some jealous jerk! I park far away but also try to blend in and not be a stand alone out there... Its hard... but gotta do what you gotta do... Some people argue that "Dude its just a car!!! Just enjoy it and drive it and not worry about these things" Well my answer to that is protecting my car and cleaning it and trying to keep it looking as new as possible as long as possible is part of enjoying it for me. Its a challenge! but it also feels GREAT when someone goes WOW your car is 2 years old??? it looks like new! Looks better than the one on the dealers lot!
