Should I trade an e60 for e39 M5?

It's hardly something you get to do every day. My point, and it is absolutely right, is that the gap between the E60 550i and the E39 is not vast, and that the E39 M5 won't "eat the 550 for breakfast" - which was the specific post I responded to. Ultimately the E39 is quicker, but by a far smaller margin than some here would have you believe. The E39 was a fine car for its day, but that day was 8 years ago. That a mainstream E60 such as the 550 is broadly as quick as the pinnacle of the prior generation is something that deserves to not get lost in the misinformation that's flying around.

Obviously its not something you do everyday. But as an enthusiast this stuff is important. The gap is not vast, but obvious in striaght line performance. Eating a 550i for breakfast may be a little extreme (posted by someone else), but none the less it is a quicker car. The e39 M5 is still a solid performer even 10 years after its introduction. BTW, nothing ive stated is misinformation, just facts.

My Ride: '08 535i sport
'01 M5
Having owned a 2001 M5 for five years before my 535 sport, I thought it was a great car. That being said, my E60 is a better everyday vehicle. I have the Dinan Stage 2 software and it pulls almost as hard as the M5 did but gets MUCH better gas mileage. It is more comfortable as well. I do wish I had kept it if I had the garage space, it was the best car in it's class early last decade. The M5 will cost more to maintain, brakes are very expensive and the clutch is notoriously week. Make sure fluids were changed by time and not mileage. M means $$$.

I say keep the E60 and save for a better model E60 in the future...
Let me do a little pro / con list for you:
***Pros of trading for the M
More power
Better handling
M prestige
Classic look (?)
***Cons of trading for the M
8 years old
Inferior interior
Higher potential maintenance costs
Fuel consumption
Dated appearance (?)
For me I never would make that trade unless I was a great BMW mechanic who could work on my own car. Personally I think the E60 looks much much better then that older bodystyle. I tend to agree that a car that old with such low miles would not react well to a new owner driving it hard. Im pretty sure whats tempting you is the fact that the M has lower miles then your current E60. Don't let that distract you from the fact that the M is 8 years old. Your E60 still has relatively low miles and has many good years ahead of it! I also have a 530i and I know it sucks that we can't do much to gain a lot of power. My plan is to wait a couple years and then pickup a 2009 /2010 550i. There will be some deals since the new bodystyle is out and the sheeple will want it just because its the newhotness.

The E39 is a classic and I still stare at ones that are in great condition on the streets but it is dated. It is definitely the enthusiast's choice but I would not trade for it nor use it as a daily driver. The maintenance/fixing costs could be minor (if you're lucky) to astonomical. A BMW M model out of warranty = separate savings account needed.
But man that is one clean, low mileage E39 M5...
