I have a 2008 528XI with 17,000 miles. Lately, the shifter won't go into reverse first thing in the morning. I try pushing in the button, wiggling it, putting it in drive. After some work, it will go into reverse. After the car is driven for awhile it's OK. The dealer says it could be a software problem, but probably they will have to replace the shifter. So he has a shifter on order, and he'll call me when it comes in.

He told me that when they replace the shifter, he will have to download software so the car will recognize the new shifter. He said when he does that, the software download could take anywhere from 10 minutes to 3 hours, as all updated software for the car will be installed at the same time. Is this a good thing? It makes me a little nervous, because I used to have a Dodge Ram with a Cummins diesel. I took it in for a dash light on, and they downloaded the latest software into the ECM to fix the dash light. What they didn't tell me is that Dodge had a safety update that installed with the new download. After that, if I opened the door when I was backing up, the horn would blow. Man that sucked.

Is BMW better with their software updates? Is there anything new I can expect my car to do after I get the updates?

An electronic shifter that needs to warm up?

IMO its your transmission that needs to be checked out. Either way - hope everything works out.
