I was playing around in the menus and came across one that said "Service Notification"....and clicked it. In there it said "Data Transmission Fault" logged in there with a date back in Aug.
What does that mean, and do I need to be concerned with it?

Thanks

As long as the warranty is good, it doesn't - get my meaning?

I think that is something to do with BMW Assist. Has the owner transferred the account to his/her name since acquiring the car?
"With TeleService, your vehicle?s operating status and upcoming service needs
are transmitted to your BMW center automatically, or manually with a push of the
?Service Request? menu option in your radio or iDrive display. A BMW service
advisor then calls you to schedule a convenient service appointment. This feature
allows your Service department to have needed parts ready, saving you time. It
also reduces the chance of a breakdown later ? adding to your peace of mind."

Mine says the same. Evidently my servicing dealer doesn't get an e-mail saying my car needs an oil change. Not a big enough deal to pursue.

i think that happens when of the the settings has been reset w/o a computer - meaning DIY via trip odometer button.
I recently i did a reset on the "vehicle inspection" for another 2 yrs and the "data trans fault" appears the same date i did the reset.
If you car is still under warranty, i wouldn't be too concerned - if you start loosing sleep over it then take it to the dealership and have them get rid of it.

Ahhhh, I feel like a dumb ass now. I was thinking "transmission" meant tranny related...not transmitting data
Yeah, it's under warranty still.....I'm going to take it in soon for a software update....I'll get them to reset it then, unless I can do it myself??

Bingo!
If you haven't purchased an E60 new on the past year or so, and if you haven't forked over moolah for BMW Assist for your older E60, then that feature will not work for you. BMW Assist allows you the option of having service data - oil changes, brake pad changes, filters - all those service items under idrive - to be automatically sent to your prefered service center so an appointment can proactively be made for you. But alas, without BMW Assist active, there are no set service centers. So...you'll get a data transmission fault. Solution? Sign up for BMW Assist @ about $200/year
