Mine also popped on last night with the HUD message of 'increased emmissions?"

Any ideas on the cause or solution?

TIA

Fluke... bad batch of gas or didnt tighten the gas cap. haha I swear. I got that error about a year ago for 3 days... I scheduled an appointment with the dealer and it went away after 3 days and I haven't seen it since. Make an appointment and monitor it... if it goes away then I wouldnt worry about it. If it staies take it in and let them download some codes.

I would hope so... what else are they suppose to be good for?
That's the point.

You get a "Service Engine Soon" light. You go to the dealer.

I took it to the dealer yyesterday, and it apears to be an O2 sensor issue. They reset the alert, and they ordered a new O2 sensor to be installed next Thursday. So far the alert has not come back on.

Thanks again for the help on this one!
Ahh...the old replace the O2 sensor trick. You got to believe that your $70K BMW has $10K worth of BS maintenance issues built into the price. That O2 sensor cleared up a few seconds after getting an over rich mixture or some other out-of-tolerance condition but didn't reset the Service Engine flag afterwards. So the dealer replaces it after resetting the flag and bills BMW $700 - $1000 for "warranty repairs" and you're on your way smilin' like the Cheshire Cat thinking you got something for free and he goes "Ka-ching" and everybody's happy. Welcome to big business. By the way....you should be a non-newbie after 25 posts.

My service engine soon light went on this morning. When starting the car it says "increased emissions" and the service engine soon light stays on. I called the dealer and he asked me about my gas cap....that wasn't the problem. I ended up scheduling an appointment for this Thursday but he told me not to be worried unless the car starts driving differently....whatever I guess. Also, kinda weird that my idrive screen went out yesterday and did not work for the remainder of the day but mysteriously works fine today.

Another minor issue....The light surrounding the left rear accessory outlet doesn't work either.

Seems OP found the culprit.

But I've seen excess oil on K&N, or after-market filter for that matter, cause problem to MAF (mass air flow sensor). So might want to be careful next time to check if that's the case.
