My Ride: #1: 2004 545i; 6-speed manual; Sport Package; Mystic Blue with a gray leather interior and Anthracite wood; CWP; Logic 7.
#2: 2010 535xi Touring; Automatic.
My punishment for spending too much time reading E60.net: last night, for the first time, my trunk opened itself. It was in my garage, and I noticed it this morning. I got fresh software in August 2005 or so.
Somehow reading about this problem in the last week put the idea in my car's head. Thanks a lot, you guys!

I've had this problem with my '04 for some time. I've twice dried out the trunk after it opened in the rain overnight in my driveway.
I'm convinced it was caused by having my key in my pants pocket and having something (cellphone, maybe) press against the opener when I bent over or was sitting. I have noticed that I need to hold the button down at least two seconds to trigger the opening sequence.
After the last time, I opened the left access panel inside the trunk. There's an adjustable spring there for the trunk opener. I set it to the least-tension setting (it's tough to move the spring, so have the right tools). Now the trunk pops open about 6 inches. I have to lift it up to reach the open position (where it holds itself open like the old five series), but I don't mind this. If it pops open in the rain at least it won't get wet inside. Doesn't fix the security issue, of course.
I recall a similar problem on my E39 -- when the key was accidentially pressed it just unlatched but didn't pop open. Frankly, I prefer the old way.
Overall, the self opening trunk is a needless "improvement". Don't think I've every walked up to the car and needed it.

I am so f***ing tired of coming out from work or home, etc, and my trunk is open! This is pissing me off!!! Is there anyway to have the auto trunk option turned off so they trunk will lock with the key? On the key, etc... I need help! I am scare to put anything in my trunk. One day my freakin' snowboard was in there and it opened. Has anyone had this issue, if so, what was your resolution. Thanks. Ruf.

BMW was aware of it, and the FCC assignments in that band that would set it off. I hope they have long since fixed that on later models, but, as I said above, Hey, ya never know.
