First of all you need to know that you should not use the dvd/tv function while driving. That is extremely dangerous, not legal in many places, and might lead to an accident. it has happened before, about a year ago in the US someone driving a pickup truck while watching movies crashed into another car on a highway and killed a family. He has been bought to trial for 2nd degree murder.
The easiest way to be able to play dvds on the i-drive screen is installing a module that has a switch to interchange between the i-drive menu / nav and the dvd player. You can order one from NavWithTV (http://www.navwithtv.com) but they are located in the usa. also I am almost 100% sure that you can buy one from bmw in europe (anyone know the part number?)
installation would involve going into the electronics bay and plugging a few wires into the module and installing the dvd player somewhere in the car. i am not sure if this will void the warantry.

no i did not do the install because it is a criminal offence to have a screen viewable to the driver in my country.
all the info i got is from the company.
that pic is a 7 but the same think can be done to all bmw's with i-drive systems.
