The engine on my E60 petrol tends to be rough after starting from cold (usually after 1 day). There is also a clatter (similar to diesel clatter). Both the roughness and clatter will disappear after a few seconds when the engine has warmed up. My SA says this is common problem and due to oil in the sump yet to flow into the engine (?!). But older BMW models (my other E36) does not have this issue. Any idea why this happens on the E60?

How do you expect us to help if you dont put your location under your avatar and do no tell us what kind of car you have in your signature?

From how you write... Petrol I can guess you're not from US... but thats not always true. I do that all the time. Saloon, Petrol, Torch, Windscreen, Boot, Bonnet, headlamps

Petrol engine can be a 520 523 525 528 530 535 545 550 M5

Also try using the search feature. If you just type in "rough engine" there plenty of threads that pop up with the same or similar issue.

Just by typing in Rough engine in the search I get tons of threads and by taking 3 mins to click through them I come up with these two.

If it is a E60 facelift, frontspoiler "smiles", it is the high pressure pump. This is a serial defect but BMW does not recall but rather wait who's annoyed enough and persistant enough to complain. I have the third one over the last three month.

Good point!

Oh yeah, some 30 inserts of the matter on this Forum about the LCI N53 L6
gasoline/petrol (523i, 525i and 530i) engines a few months ago.

I have a 523i and it does the same, like a tapping sound when engine is cold, not all the time but has happened a few times. After driving and when the engine is warm, the noise disappears completely. Thinking of using a thicker oil the next time which I think will get rid of this noise (believe currently using 0w 40).
