I had this issue in early November on my 2006 530xi. Dealer performed a short test and found a fault code in the passenger seat occupancy mat. They replaced the mat and cleared the fault memory code. Haven't had an issue since then. My car is under warranty so I don't have any idea of the cost of repair.
Me too. Except I have a 2004 530i

Hello,

I got a 525d touring (2005) out of warranty and got the same problem. BMW brussels charge me 349 EUROS to get rid of this malfunction. They replaced the passenger seat mat and cleared the fault memory code.

This is really weird. My car (04 -530) just did this last week. The warning is still on - do you think disconecting the battery will reset anything? My car is out of warranty due to mileage and I just had the Class Action Lawsuit thing taken care of about a month ago. I had to give them a copy of my letter. It seems that people have had the problem fixed with this letter, but mine seems to have been caused by this work.

"Airbag Off" light comes on and off when my son ( 80lb ) sits in the front. I didn't pay much attention about it untill the iDrive showed "Passenger Restrain System" message yesterday evening. The message disappeared when the engine was off. I took the car to the dealer today and the SA didn't find any error code from the car key but was willing to take my car in for further testing. Thank god their computer found the fault code 991D. As per BMW bulletin, the dealer performed SI B 65 21 03. Not sure what is that for. SA told me it was a software reprogramming. I hope that fixes the problem.

I've not had any personal experience with any of my BMW's but in the past a recall/safety system failure well outside of the warranty on our Nissan Quest/Mercury Villager was fixed at no cost by our dealer [3 yrs/36Kmile warranty - vehicle was 6 yrs old w/70K miles at time of recall]. This was an actual recall - not a technical service bulletin.

Based on all I've read on this and other forums it seems the consumer protection laws in the United States protect consumers better than those in Canada.

That said, IMHO a prestegious brand like BMW, would do serious harm to its image by failing to quickly and fairly address and remedy safety system failures reported to its dealers by customers. Perhaps the Corp BMW rep monitoring this forum can report the "corporate" position on failures of this sort . Alternatively the attorneys on the forum, who own BMW's, might be interested in the biz.

well i got my ride back from the dealership
I guess a low battery charge tripped off the sensor, which is a relief and cheap fix!

i thought a lot of cars later 2005 and some 2006 had the faulty sensor issue. My friends 525i had it and his is a 10/05 production , had it done under warranty . Their is a thread on it somewhere in the forum, i remember reading it in 2006

I am taking my car back in two weeks for a second visit for the same issue (all under warranty, thankfully). The first time, they fixed it with the software reprogam and it went away for a week, but then came back. Hopefully, this time they will change the sensor and actually fix it rather than just clearing the computer out.

Guys, I had the seat mat replaced like for the 4th time. I have an '04 year model. The dealer had it covered under warranty since it was a constant problem 3 times during warranty. A couple times now the passenger restraint system error msg would show up sporadically and then go away. I think it is just a matter of time before I go in for the 5th time to get the same problem fix. The last time the error msg would come on and off before it stayed on all the time.

I don't know why BMW can't get their seat mat sensor straighten out--every 15 to 20,000 miles the issue haunts me! I have about 100,000 miles on the car now.
